Kanye West's Controversy with Adidas and Balenciaga: What You Need to Know.

If you follow Ye, you already know 2022 was the year the fashion side of the empire came apart. Here is what actually happened with Adidas and Balenciaga, laid out plainly, without spin.
What set it off
In October 2022, Ye made a series of antisemitic and offensive statements across interviews and social media. The remarks drew widespread condemnation, and the brands that had built product lines around him started to move.
Balenciaga cut ties first
Balenciaga, part of the Kering group, was the first major partner to walk. The house had featured Ye in campaigns and put him on the runway. In late October 2022 it confirmed it had ended the relationship and had no further plans to work with him.
Adidas ended Yeezy
Adidas followed on October 25, 2022, terminating the Yeezy partnership "effective immediately." That deal had been one of the most lucrative in the industry, and ending it cost Adidas a reported hit running into the hundreds of millions of euros for the year. Gap had already wound down its own Yeezy Gap line the month before.
Adidas kept ownership of the existing Yeezy designs and, through 2023, sold off remaining stock in stages rather than destroy it, pledging portions of the proceeds to organizations fighting hate and antisemitism.
Why it mattered
These were not small licensing deals. Yeezy reshaped how sneakers were released, marketed, and resold, and it made Ye one of the wealthiest figures in music. When the partnerships collapsed, so did a large share of that valuation, and the fallout reached agents, buyers, and collaborators across the industry.
Ye's music and his influence on a generation of design are their own conversation. The events of 2022 are a separate chapter, and the facts above are where that chapter stands.
